A Chinese blue and white soft paste ‘Deer and Pine Tree’ vase.
18th century.

The vase stands on a spreading foot, with the lower section tapering to a narrow waist, rising to a bulbous body and a slightly inward-sloping circular neck. It is finely decorated in underglaze blue on a crackled white ground with a deer standing in front of a pine tree, a fungus growing beside it, and a bat flying overhead.

Compare with a mug in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection, accession number: 185-1885.
