A Chinese bronze paperweight or scroll weight in the form of a monk, presumably Damo.
Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
The relatively heavy miniature sculpture is well-cast in a seated position with one leg raised, the robe draped around his body has a floral decoration on the back, the monk displaying a fierce facial expression. The metal has a grey color, indicating a high zinc content.
Sculptures like this example were used to weigh down papers in the scholar’s studio.
