A late Ming blue and white Kraak bowl.
Wanli period, ca. 1580-1600.
The bowl painted in underglaze blue, a glazed recessed base marked ‘fu gui jia qi’ (fine vessel for wealth and honour), resting on a high foot rim and high, slightly flared sides, a bracket-lobed rim and sides moulded in low relief with ten slightly lobed panels, decorated in underglaze blue with rocky landscapes, pagodas and banners, birds perched on flowering branches, floral sprays and flying horses leaping over crested waves and flames, alternated by Buddhist auspicious emblems (alternating flaming wheels, chakras and ruyi-heads), these repeating designs are arranged in radial segments and distinct horizontal bands around a central medallion on the interior.
